Born From Neighbors Who Refused to Wait
In 1962, the residents of Joppa realized that help shouldn't have to travel far to arrive. A handful of volunteers gathered with a donated truck and a shared conviction — that everyone in our community deserves protection, no matter how remote the address.
Six decades later, that same spirit drives every call we answer. Our station is staffed entirely by neighbors — farmers, teachers, tradespeople, and retirees — who drop everything the moment the alarm sounds. This isn't a job for us. It's a promise.

The Same People You Pass on Main Street
Every member of Joppa VFD Station 1 lives here. They shop at the same stores, send their kids to the same schools, and sit in the same pews. When the alarm sounds, they don't drive in from out of town — they roll out from their own driveways.
That's the difference between a department and a community. It's the reason our response times are fast and our bond with this town runs deeper than any badge or uniform.
Community Events
Open houses, station tours, and fire safety demos throughout the year.
Youth Programs
Junior firefighter camps and mentorship for teens interested in public service.
Partnerships
Working alongside sheriff's office, EMA, and local Red Cross chapters.
Six Decades of Courage & Commitment
From a single donated truck to a fully equipped station, our story is written in every life we've protected and every home we've helped rebuild.
The Beginning
A small group of Joppa residents pooled resources, secured a donated truck, and formed the Joppa Volunteer Fire Department to protect their rural community.
Station Built
The community raised funds to construct a permanent station on Al Highway 69, giving our volunteers a dedicated home base and faster response capability.
Growing Stronger
Equipment upgrades, new volunteer recruitment, and expanded training programs brought Station 1 into the modern era while keeping its volunteer roots intact.
Still Standing Ready
With 40+ dedicated volunteers, modern apparatus, and a commitment that hasn't wavered in over 60 years — Joppa VFD Station 1 remains one of the heartbeats of this community.
